Former African champion, Enyimba of Aba has spread the red carpet for its young defender, Ikouwem Udoh, who was recently named the best young player in the country by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In celebrating the 18-year-old, who moved from Enyimba Feeders last season to the main team, the club said, “the award marks a significant milestone in the rise of the defender who, up until a year ago, was a member of the Enyimba youth team.

It caps what has been a memorable year for the 18-year-old, who only made his debut for the senior team of the People’s Elephant in the 2017 NPFL season.

“The youngster would go on to make 10 appearances over the course of the season, excelling in both his defensive and attacking responsibilities from left back,” Enyimba said in a statement.

Udoh has made a remarkable upwards movement in his career, including receiving a call up and making the team to the last African Nations Championship, where he helped Nigeria to a best-ever finish at the CHAN.

He played three games as Nigeria finished second in CHAN behind hosts, Morocco.

Udoh beat off competition from FC Zurich’s Stephen Odey and forward Nura Mohammed to claim the prize at the Award Ceremony in Lagos.

Meanwhile, Enyimba says it has started preparations for its participation in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup in which it will visit Beninoise side, Energie in the second round of the competition.

Enyimba drew bye in the first round with a clash with either Energie or Guinean side, Hafia, who met in the preliminary round.

Energie won the first leg 1-0 and drew 1-1 with the Guineans in Conakry to pick the date with Enyimba.

According to the fixtures, Enyimba will travel to Energie’s Stade Saint-Louis on March 6, and host the Beninoise 2016/2017 league runners up on March 16.
