Few days into the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, major upsets have been recorded, as perennial giants like Spain, Brazil, Argentina and defending champions, Germany all failing to record wins in their opening games.

Germany was left worse off, as Mexico handed her a 1-0 defeat on Sunday, despite the firepower in the array of stars paraded by the world champions. The Spanish team was held to a pulsating 3-3 draw by the Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portuguese team. Argentina was held to a 1-1 draw by Iceland. Similarly, the Samba Boys of Brazil also drew 1-1 in their opening game against Switzerland.

These results have been attracting reactions from football supporters worldwide who suspect they might be in for one of the best editions of the greatest football showpiece on the planet after just four days of action.

A football enthusiast, Gbolahan Adbulhakeem, who expressed shock at the outcome of their match with Mexico, said: “It was a total shock for Mexico to beat Germany, I wasn’t expecting it, the World Cup has been very interesting because of its unpredictability and I am sure Mexico wouldn’t have believed they will come out victorious last night.”

A female football supporter, Oluwadamilola Adeniji added her voice to the surprising outcome of the defending champion, stating that the matches have been inconsistent, as underrated teams are tackling the big guns. She said, “it’s a slap on their face that they were defeated, especially as it was their first game. This goes to show how unpredictable this 2018 World Cup seems to be.”

Meanwhile, Harrison Mmerrenu said the World Cup is a reminder to every football supporter not to underrate any team with the unfolding of events. He said, “more than ever before, the matches played so far just go to remind us that no team should be underrated. Even though Argentina struggled to qualify for tournament, the odds favoured them against Iceland, but performance on the pitch said otherwise. Also, not even in my wildest dreams would I have given it to Mexico over a disciplined German side that doubles as the defending champions.”
