Lagos State Government has taken a decisive step towards tackling any oil spillage from its exploration site whenever it occurs to prevent environmental degradation and disruption of means of livelihood of host communities.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Olawale Oluwo, who discled this at a Traffic Radio Programme in Lagos, explained that the State Government has taken a proactive measure through a reliable and formidable partnership with foreign firms that are highly experienced and swift in response to oil spillage anytime it occurs.
According to the Commissioner, ‘’everything is being done by the present administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at ensuring that host communities do not regret that oil was found in their domain in terms of spillages that could terminate their means of livelihood or putting them out of business pointing out that international best practices are also being deployed at its Aje Oil Field in Badagry managed by Folawiyo Foundation, and other prospective oil fields.

Speaking on the activities of miners in the state, Oluwo explained that reasonable job opportunities are being created, as more people are engaging in sand dealing business at the mining sites, which are being coordinated by the Ministry to forestall illegality and unwholesome practices. He added that the generation of 3,000 MW power by the State Government for residents will be backed by a standard taskforce consumers who are not to thwart government good intention.
He said: ‘’although consumers are expected to pay a little more for the consumption of the 3,000 MW power supply, but it will be very reliable and runs 24-hours to boost security and businesses as well as enhancing the economy of the state’’.
On the question of deploying an underground cable for the distribution of the power generated, the Commissioner said the desire of government to save cost informed the decision to use already existing Distribution Companies (DISCOS) wires rather than underground cable which expences will be too cumbersome for government to bear.
While expressing Government’s desire to establishing a formidable Ceramic Processing Centre in the state through preliminary studies for ceramic skill acquisition, the Commissioner said more geological mappings are being conducted by government through the Ministry in parts of the State for location of more mineral resources towards creating jobs. enhancing revenue generation in the State .
