Newly appointed chairman of the award panel, Dr. Kweku Tando said yesterday that they would build on the success of the past leaders, just as he hinted that some new categories would be introduced into the award.

The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Dr. Kweku Tandoh is confident the dissolved 36 state sports associations would be reconstituted once Governor Akinwunmi Ambode gives his final approval.

All the sports associations, except football, were recently dissolved to enable Lagos organise and reposition the activities of all the bodies in line with the state’s vision of making Lagos the sports hub of Africa.

With the guideline released recently to usher in new associations once the governor gives his consent, Tandoh has revealed what the Commission wants from the new associations.

He insists that the state is looking forward to having association members who would be passionate about the sport they will oversee with a view to securing sponsorship rather than relying totally on government’s grant.

“We are hoping that within the next couple of weeks, we should have concluded the exercise of bringing in the new members on board of all the associations. And once we have the final approval from Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, we will release the list.

“One of the things we are actually looking out for this time around is to ensure that we have association members that are committed, who are passionate and are able to draw sponsorship for the sport they oversee,” he said.

Tandoh added: “We want associations that will be able to more or less organise at least the basic thing that their respective sports associations need to organise in terms of putting up developmental programmes rather than having to run to the state government for everything. We do not want that kind of board this term around.

“So, we are taking our time to ensure that in line with our governor’s directive. We want men and women of passion, those that are committed, who will move the Lagos sports forward and also engender the private, public sector participation that we need in the running of sports in the state,” he stated.
