Chief Executive Officer of Polio Rescue Association, Mr. Olugbenga Kuye has described the Polio Rescue Para Soccer competition held at the weekend as a grand breaking event aimed at helping victims of the ailment live normal life.

The tournament, a one-day competition supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), was held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

In the one-day game, Polio Rescue Team defeated LSSC Team 2-1 to the admiration of fans, who thronged the venue to watch the players displaying their talents.

Kuye revealed that the event was supported by LSSC and Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, adding that the polio awareness match was part of a programme created to enable the victims have a sense of belonging in the society.

“The battle against polio is a struggle that must be won in collaboration with others. We want to make sure there is no single organisation that will claim ownership of this fight. And that is why we want to join hands with other Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), government agencies and well meaning Nigerians to support us in this fight.

“We need the media to amplify this fight because this war is not about gun and bullet, but of words. We need to alert the people on the evils of polio and for us to invite the victims by showing love to them,” he said.

Speaking at the occasion, the Special Adviser to Lagos Governor On Sports/Chairman, LSSC, Mr. Deji Tinubu said the state believes in giving the less-privileged a sense of belonging.“This has always been part of the programme of the state, helping those living with disabilities by creating opportunities for them.”

Our plan for the organisation of Para soccer league is very much on course. It is part of our larger plan to keep these athletes busy and give them something to be proud of,” Tinubu said.
