The Lagos State House of Assembly has resolved that roads in the state would be properly maintained by the Public Works Corporation (PWC).
Mr Setonji David, the Chairman, House Ad hoc Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
David said the committee had been going round the state to assess road conditions, adding that the committee had also made its position known to the corporation.
The lawmaker, representing (APC-Badagry II) in the assembly, said: “We have started and we have visited a number of places. Some roads are still in a very worse state.
“We are prevailing on the PWC to start work, and they have started in the area of road maintenance. We have urged them to continue with the maintenance.
“We have invited them (PWC officials) to meetings to express our displeasure about the state of roads in the state and the general manager has assured us that things would improve.
“As earlier stated by the House Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, the corporation has to do a good job.
“This is because we cannot repair a road and in another one week the same road becomes bad again and have potholes.
“We will ensure that maintenance of the roads is done properly and solid, so that such roads can stand the test of time. We will be on their neck to deliver on roads maintenance.”

He said that plans were on to have road maintenance units in virtually all the 20 local government areas and local council development areas in the state.
The chairman said that his committee would continue to monitor the corporation by going to sites and visit those projects executed to ensure that thorough jobs were carried out.
David added that the committee had visited Ibeju-Lekki Local Government area to see what PWC had done.
He said now that when rains subsidies maintenance activities would resume by the corporation.
According to him, the three major asphalt plants in the state located in Ojodu Berger, Badagry and Imota areas of Ikorodu have commenced production.
“Our roads are being maintained gradually, and soon all of them will be in order.
“We are going to have very significant changes in the state of our roads infrastructure in Lagos State in the next one month.
“The resuscitation of the asphalt plants will expedite actions on road maintenance operations.
“We believe that under one or two months, there will be significant changes in the maintenance activities on our roads in Lagos State,” he said.
The lawmaker, who is an engineer by profession, decried the incessant flood on roads in the state and the manner in which people blocked drainage channels with refuse.
“The major enemy of road is water; when the road retains water, it destroys the roads and that is what is causing problem all over the states.
“That is why we are always clamouring that our drainage system should be efficient and clean.
“Our people must realise that they need to stop dumping of refuse in the drainage channels,” he said.
