As Muslims faithful all over the world marks the Eid-el-Kabir, Sallah celebration, Lagos State Wastes Management Authority, LAWMA, has urged residents on the need to desist from indiscriminate dumping of wastes during the celebration in order to prevent dire consequences of flooding on lives and properties, as a result of blocked drainage.
Similarly, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, has urged residents and motorists to be safety and security cautious during these periods. On the wastes, Executive Chairman, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Olumuyiwa Adejokun, in an interview with newsmen, warned residents, especially Muslims that will be killing rams and organising party, to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste in water channels and unwholesome disposal of waste in the state as such could lead to heavy flooding, with dire consequences on lives and property of citizenry, especially, during the current persistent heavy rainfall in the state.
Adejokun said as part of measures to effectively and efficiently manage waste disposal during the celebration, “We have put adequate planning in place to ensure prompt evacuation of wastes of all kinds. “We have directed our PSP and LAWMA trucks to operate on a 12 hour operation, as well as go on a round tripping, that is doubling their trips on waste evacuation. This will believed, will eliminate any form of delays or excuses for non evacuation of wastes.”
He frowned at the unhygienic ways some of the animals are reared and the unhygienic ways they are waste are being disposed. While urging residents to embrace the waste management policy of the state government during the Sallah celebration by patronizing state’s Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, and Public Sector Participants, PSP, for the disposal of solid waste, warned against patronizing cart pushers.
“The illegal act is inimical to the waste management policy of the state government, because whatever solid waste cart pushers collect end up inside canals, which eventually cause flooding and other diseases.
“People should bag their wastes during Sallah period and make it easy for us to pick. If anyone notice erring PSP operator, please call us on our toll free lines; 5577, 070, 806, 01020. Someone would be there to pick the call and we will react to them promptly, as long as it has to do with waste collection,” Adejokun said.
