A 27-year-old man, Mannir Abubakar, has been arraigned before a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old mentally ill girl.

It was gathered that Abubakar, who resides in the Dan Hako Quarter, Kofar Kaura, Katsina metropolis, was arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for having unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim on May 6, 2019.

According to the NSCDC, the accused person, on the said date, took the victim to his residence around 12.30pm and allegedly raped her.

Officials of the security agency noted that vigilant neighbours, who noticed Abubakar’s suspicious movement, trailed him to his house, where they caught him committing the act.

They subsequently apprehended him and handed him over to officials of the NSCDC.

The NSCDC stated that Abubakar confessed to committing the crime during interrogation.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Lawal Bello, told the court that the accused was being charged for the offence of rape in contravention of Section 283 of the Penal Code Law.

He asked the court for more time to enable the police to conclude investigation into the matter.

The presiding magistrate, Hajiya Fadile Dikko, while granting the request, ordered that Abubakar should be remanded in prison custody until August 7, 2019, when the case would come up for mention. [PUNCH]
