Manchester United’s poor start to the season continued as they could only draw 2-2 at home to Aston Villa.

Jack Grealish had given the away side the lead with a fantastic curling effort from the left side of the penalty area.

Dean Smith’s side thought they had doubled their lead when Trezeguet scored, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

But just minutes before half-time, Tom Heaton scored an unfortunate own-goal when Marcus Rashford’s header hit the post, hit the goalkeeper and went in.

And when Victor Lindelof gave United a 64th-minute lead, it looked as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side would jump up to fifth in the table.

But just 112 seconds later, Vlla were level.

Tyrone Mings looked offside from Matt Targett’s hopeful ball as the defender volleyed it in. He didn’t even celebrate in the fear that VAR would rule it out.

But replays showed that he was onside and the goal stood.

The result leaves United in ninth, a massive 22 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The pressure is very much on Solskjaer.

It doesn’t get any easier for him and United, either.

They face Jose Mourinho’s Spurs on Wednesday before the Manchester derby on Saturday evening.

They could be even further away from Liverpool and even closer to the relegation zone come this time next week.
