All is now set for the 21st Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, which will dunk off in Bauchi State on May 3, the organisers have disclosed.
The championship will see over 10, 000 boys and girls secondary schools across the country jostling to play in the national finals in Lagos. It promises to be exciting, as the organisers have declared that all participating schools will get the best officiating.
Speaking at the unveiling of the programme for this year’s competition in Lagos at the weekend, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nestle Nigeria PLC, Mauricio Alarcon said the championship was organised every year to encourage children to be active in sports.
He added: “The Milo Basketball Championship has also provided a platform to help children imbibe life skills and values, which enable them to be successful in any area of their lives, on or off the court. These values include perseverance through hardship, courage to overcome fear, ability to work in a team, self-belief, respect and leadership.
“As the company kicks, we look forward, not only to the display of skills and sportsmanship, but also to reaching many more children who will be inspired to participate in sports.”

Also speaking at the occasion, Category Manager, Beverages, Nestle Nigeria, Olufemi Akintola said, “This year, the Milo Basketball Championship started as usual with schools registration. Online registration has now been introduced to broaden participation and for greater convenience.
“Once registration was completed, we moved to the state preliminaries and finals, where one team emerged each in the boy’s and girls categories as state champions. These state champions will play in four regional conference to vie for space at the national finals.”
According to Akintola, the Savannah Conference will hold from May 3 to 8 in Buachi State, where Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Jigawa, Gombe, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, Yobe and Taraba states would compete.
In the Central Conference holding in Minna, Niger State from May 10 to 25, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara and FCT will slug it out for the national finals ticket.
The Equatorial Conference will hold in Enugu from May 17 to 22, with Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Rivers states vying for the finals ticket, while in the Western conference will hold in Ibadan from May 24 to 29, with Delta, Edo, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states in contention.
The year’s final will hold inside the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos from June 27 to July 4, with the conference champions and runners up competing for the champions trophy, cash prize, basketball kits and lots of other Milo goodies.
