Nadsir, Odunade win Ex-Squash Pros Diaspora Championship

Abudulrakeem Nadsir of Kwara State and Adeyi Odunade were crowned champions of the male and female U-16 category of the Ex- Squash Pros Diaspora Championship held at the Squash Section of the Teslim Balogun Stadium at the weekend.

The tournament, which is a developmental event for U-16 and U-13 children, was highly entertaining as over 70 children from across the country participated in the three-day event.

Abudulrakeem won the U-16 male final by beating Mustapha Habeem, 11-4, 11- 8, 9-11 and 11-8, while in the female U-16 event, Odunade defeated Aminat 11-4, 11-9, 13-11.

Kwara players dominated the tournament with the state’s Dorosinlorun Misturat beating her sister Dorosinlorun Ishat to win the U-13 female category. In the male U-13 event, Gideon Bala beat Ibrahim Balogun to take the crown.

Speaking at the event, chairman of the Ex-Squash Pros in Diaspora, Femi Solomon said the tournament was a big success, assuring that the organisation would work hard to make next year’s edition more successful.

“I am delighted that the tournament met our target, which is to assist children sharpen their skills in the game of squash. The president of Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) with his board has really supported the effort of players in Diaspora to revive squash in the country.

“More tournaments of this nature would be organised this year. Plans are also in top gear to make the Diaspora championship more interesting next year,” he said.

President of Squash Federation Boye Oyerinde commended the Squash players in diaspora for coming to together to improve the standard of the game in Nigeria.
“The new Board of Squash would ensure that squash players get more tournament to improve their rankings. The large turn out of children in the diaspora tournament is a sign that their is future for the game at the grass roots level, “he said.
