The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has revealed that African champions, D’Tigress would be strengthen to ensure they give the continent the desired quality representation at the Spain 2018 World Cup.

Nigeria defeated Senegal in the final of the FIBA Afrobasket Championship on Sunday to win their third continental title. The D’Tigress semifinal defeat of Mali on Saturday had earlier ensured the Nigerians qualified for the World Cup.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, NBBF General Secretary, Chimezie Asiegbu said the federation will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the girls gave Africa good representation in Spain, adding the team would soon begin preparations for the competition.

He noted that Nigeria won the African championship despite the crises in the board, saying the victory in Mali would have not been possible if not for the quick intervention of the present board members, who provided funds for the championship when government did not release money for the competition.

The NBBF secretary assured that the board would continue to improve basketball in the country, stressing that the Coach Sam Vincent-tutored side would be given all the needed support to make a mark in the World Basketball championship slated to hold in Spain next year.

“The NBBF is delighted that D’Tigress were able to win the championship in Mali despite the crises in the board. This victory is for Nigeria. “With this victory, it is well known that the present NBBF board is on the  move to change the face of basketball in Nigeria. The girls are heroines that must be celebrated,” he said. The D’Tigress, who arrived in the country yesterday, according to NBBF, will be beefed up ahead of next year’s world championship in Spain.
