Sand Eagles celebrating their victory over Ghana
The national beach soccer team, Sand Eagles, will know their opponents in the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which draws will hold today in Nassau, Bahamas.
Nigeria last participated in the competition when Italy hosted it in 2011, where it got to the quarterfinals. The country was also in the 2006, 2007 and 2009 editions of the competition.

This year’s event will hold in Bahamas, with 16 teams vying for the trophy from April 27 to May 7. According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), FIFA Instructor and Team Administrator of the Supersand Eagles, Mr. Sunday Okayi, will represent the country at the ceremony scheduled for the Hotel Atlantis.
Previous FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup finals were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2005, 2006, 2007), Marseilles, France (2008), Dubai, UAE (2009), Ravenna, Italy (2011, Tahiti (2013) and Espinho, Portugal (2015). Portugal are the defending champions after defeating Tahiti 5-3 in the final two years ago.
The NFF in a statement revealed that 13 out of the 16 participating countries have already emerged, following the success of Mexico and Panama at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament that took place in The Bahamas from February 20 to 26. The three remaining finalists will emerge at the Asian qualifying tournament billed for March 4 to 11.
