Former coach of the Super Falcons, Ismalia Mabo is unhappy with the leadership of the Nigeria Women Football League headed by Aisha Falode for its failure to secure a title sponsor for the league in fulfillment of their promises.
At the inauguration of the body, Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung threw a challenge to the members to rebrand ‘their products’ so that the league can have sponsors, partners and investors.
The Falode-led NWFL and others like the Nigeria National League (NNL) and the Nigeria Nationwide League One came on board at the same time. However, while the NNL and Nationwide League One are marching on, securing millions of naira sponsorship from corporate organisations, the women league is still at a stand still. The situation is giving Mabo and some stakeholders serious concern.

“I thought Aisha Falode would be able to secure sponsorship for the women’s league within a short period of time,” Mabo told The Guardian in a telephone chat. “The season is coming to an end, and I am yet to hear of a title sponsorship for the women’s league. I am disappointed in them.”
Speaking further, Mabo, who led the Super Falcons to the quarterfinal at USA ’99 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the best record by any Nigerian coach, urged the NWFL leadership to humble itself by approaching those who are in a better position to assist them in securing a sponsor for the league.
“To get a sponsor for the league is not a one-man show,” he said. “I want the present leadership of the NWFL to stop bragging and meet people like Alhaja Ayo Omidiran, Elddinton Kuejubola and others who have been seen it all in the game of women football. They will show them how to do it. I know that the economy is bad, but if those in the lower cadre of the men’s league could get a sponsor, why not the NWFL? They should move fast,” Mabo stated.
It would be recalled that the former NWFL board headed by Chief Dilichukwu Onyedinma was antagonised by some members in the current board simply because they could not secure sponsors for the league.
