The first Nigerian Satire Festival holds in Abuja on November 16 at Sheraton in Abuja, with the theme, ‘Satire: Society’s Mirror,’ to commemorate the United Nations (UN) International Day of Tolerance.

The event is organised by The Arts and Civics Table Organisation (TACT) as part of its commitment to promoting meaningful and productive conversations between citizens and government.

According to Co-Founder of TACT, Ose Anenih: “The Satire Festival will create a veritable platform of promoting and deepening civic engagement and social discourse through the use of satire.

“In those two days, we aim to highlight serious issues without offending sensibilities.”

Yemi Adesanya, Co-Founder of TACT added that the festival is only one of the various programmes through which the organisation hopes to reawaken citizens’ consciousness and stimulate a desire for positive change in the country.

Activities lined up for the debut festival include satire and art presentations by leading Nigerian satirists, such as Okechukwu Ofili (aka OFFILISPEAKS), Mike Asukwo, Justin Irabor and Dr. Damages.

There would be discussions by a panel that would include thought leaders, such as Henry Okelue, Funke Baruwa, Amara Nwakpa, Cheta Nwanze, Kunle Lawal and Samuel Ogundipe.

Another highlight of the event is the stage play, ‘Made in Nigeria,’ to be performed by Dike Chukwumerije.

The festival ends with a dinner and roast in the style of United States White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with feature performances by Dr Damages; comedian, Gordons and Frank D Don; spoken word poet, Omoawe; vocalist, Lawrence Lloyd-Benson, and the multi-talented acoustic musician, CEF.

The Roast would also have journalists, members of civil society organisations, political office holders, musicians, students, clerics and selected satirists participating, with a satire-themed cartoon and art exhibition running throughout the two-day event.
