Nigeria’s teen golf sensation, Georgia Oboh at the weekend lived up to the hype that has followed her every move in golf when she finished as the fifth best player at the 2018 US Teen World Championship held at the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in North Carolina, United States.

The competition, which featured 73 players from 20 countries across the world, was won by U.S’s Nicole Adam with Oboh registering scores of 73/75/76 to finish fifth in a field of 73 girls aged from 15 to 18.

Before heading to North Carolina, Oboh, a former World Teen Champion, had featured in tournaments meant for her seniors, including the US Women’s Amateur Qualifying in Florida, where she missed out a spot in the playoffs even after shooting a score of 72 (level par). She however, bounced back at the USGA Girls Championships in California with scores of 75 and 79 in tough conditions with fog weather delays. She then missed the matchplay cut by three shots but otherwise a great performance under the conditions

Oboh will now move on to compete in the Florida Women’s Open, a professional event featuring female golf professionals and top lady amateurs in the USA held in Naples Florida from August 10 to 12.Oboh is also billed to represent Nigeria in the World Amateur event, which is the biggest field of top amateurs worldwide from August 29 to September 1 alongside her compatriot – Anita Uwadia. The tournament will be held in Dublin, Ireland and it is held every two years for the world’s best amateurs from all countries.

In October, Oboh is due to represent Nigeria at the World Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but the teenager is still sourcing funds to train for this tournament.Oboh is seeking to make giant strides in the golfing world with funds being a major hindrance to her ambition of putting Nigeria on global map of golf.
