Former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tunji Egbetokun has raised the alarm over threat to his life and that of his family from anonymous political personalities.
Egbetokun, who spoke with journalists yesterday in Lagos, made personate appeal to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to save him from the hands of those he suspected as opponents who are not comfortable with his present political principles.
Egbetokun, a former chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who served as Speaker of the Ogun state House of Assembly between year 2008 and 2011 during the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel, joined Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) now All Progressives Congress (APC), just before the 2011 general elections.
He was however, appointed as the Senior Special Assistant (S.S.A) on General Duties upon the electoral victory of the incumbent governor of Ogun state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun before they later part ways in the build-up to the year 2015 general elections.
But Speaking with journalists, Egbetokun alleged that there had been constant threat to his life and that of his family members by unknown people who are warning him to desist from supporting a particular governorship aspirant for the year 2019 election in Ogun.
With particular mentioning of the name of a serving Senator, the former Speaker alleged that the anonymous callers specifically told him to withdraw his supports for Solomon Olamilekan Adeola who is popularly called “Yayi”.
Egbetokun, who said he has been noticing strange movements around his house in recent time, further stated that those anonymous callers have been warning his wife to prevail on her husband to retrace his steps or face the consequences.
“My wife has been receiving strange warning from unknown quarters to caution me to retrace my step or face whatever consequence that may come out of my political actions, regardless of me and my family’s whereabout within the country. I have also been receiving several threat from known and unknown people on phone and have also noticed some strange movement around my house recently”.
He said the development has necessitated him to continually move his family from one location to another within the country for fear of being attacked since he is no longer in government.
”Now that the 2019 general election is fast approaching and the political stage is getting tougher, I know my political opponents are jittery because of my influence in the state and my support for a particular candidate, so I might need to relocate my family to a location outside the country for their safety and adequate protection, giving the prevailing circumstances I find myself,” he said. The former lawmaker however, declared that he would not for any reason compromise principles that negates fairness, objectivity, sincerity of purpose, love for mankind and the endurance of a sane society where life will be more bearable and pleasant to everyone in Ogun state and beyond
