Some petty traders in Lagos State on Saturday did not participate in the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections but went about their normal businesses, The observed.
The biggest culprits were bread, drinks and food sellers in the metropolis. Not even the presence of fierce-looking soldiers and policemen across the city could scare or deter them.
As early as 8:00a.m. the popular Ikpodo area of Ikeja was already brimming with activities of traders in local herbs, drinks and roots, popularly called Sepe. Some of the traders had high patronage as customers surrounded them.
One of the traders who was approached by The noted that people were hungry and needed food to eat. The woman who wanted to remain anonymous said: “My customers told me yesterday (Friday) to make food for them because they would be hungry. I had to do it because if I don’t, some of them would not have anything to eat”.
A police source said they find it difficult to arrest them because they are harmless. “It is difficult to arrest these set of people because they are harmless. Besides, some of them survive daily by their little earnings.”
Also at their duty posts and with their regular customers were lotto operators. They opened for business and had many coming around to play their game of chance winnings.
Youths were not left out as many of them were sighted in Oregun, Ajegunle, Surulere, Lagos Island, Orile, Ikeja and other parts of Lagos playing football on the streets and highways, although they gave way for vehicles of observers, security operatives and journalists who were monitoring election.
