A member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Rita Orji has lamented the absence of sporting facilities in the densely populated Ajegunle axis of Lagos State.

Orji, who represents Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State, maintained that the youths would be engaged in productive activities if the authorities built sporting facilities in the area, adding it was unfortunate that the Ajegunle suburb, which had produced award-winning sportsmen for Nigeria over the years, cannot boast a single standard football pitch.

Orji argued that the absence of such sporting facilities was partly responsible for the rise in drug abuse, cultism, thuggery, and other violent criminal activities.

She referred to the adoption of her motion aimed at commencing work on the proposed skills acquisition centre in Ajeromi /Ifelodun Councils of Lagos State as an instance of her intervention in the lower legislative chamber, adding that she would leave no stone unturned until the Ajegunle area got its due.

She disclosed that the centre, which has already been approved by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), will be the first to be established in the South West geopolitical zone.

She added that it would occupy a parcel of land measuring about 3.4 hectares, while hoping that the centre, which would equip no fewer than 1,200 youths annually in her constituency, would reduce the menace of jobless youths often referred to as area boys.

“The centre would also harness their enormous potential and enable the youths become self-reliant with a view to generating a pool of indigenous and trained manpower sufficient to meet the needs of the private sectors of the entire constituency and beyond,” she added.
