South Korean prosecutors demanded that the country’s ousted President Park Geun-hye be sentenced to 30 years jail following a major corruption scandal, which led to her impeachment.According to the Yonhap news agency, the court hearings on the government intervention incident, which led to the country’s first ever impeachment and dismissal of a president, concluded earlier in the day.
Apart from the imprisonment, the prosecution seeks a fine of 118.5 billion won (127 million dollars).The defendant boycotted the trial at the Seoul Central District Court in protest over the court’s earlier ruling to extend her detention.
The ruling will be announced in late March or early April.

The political scandal around Park broke out in late October 2016, when the media reported that the former president had allowed her close associate Choi Soon-sil, who did not hold any official post, to get involved in state affairs.
The scandal resulted in Park’s impeachment in December 2016 that was confirmed by the country’s Constitutional Court on March 10., 2017.
On March 30, 2017, Park was arrested over corruption accusations, involving 13 different cases of bribery, coercion and abuse of power.
Park was charged in particular with forcing companies to sign contracts beneficial for Choi and her associates.
On Oct. 13, 2017, a Seoul court extended Park’s detention for a period of six months.
