Sixty-four prison inmates including a woman have regained their freedom in Sokoto following the payment of their fines and compensations totalling N6million by Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
They were serving various jail terms at the Sokoto Central Prison and Wurno,Tambuwal, Gwadabawa, Bissalam Satellite prisons.
The beneficiaries were also given N10, 000 each as transport fare back to their respective towns and villages.
Senator Wamakko who addressed the beneficiaries, said the move was to ameliorate the suffering of the people in the Holy Month of Ramadan. Represented by Secretary, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko Free Legal Services Foundation Barrister
Abdulhameed Zubairu ,Wamakko added that it was to contribute to measures aimed at decongesting prisons, and facilitate the smooth administration of justice.
He said the gesture was extended to prison inmates in the state during the Eid-el- Fitr and Eid-el- Kabir. The Senator advised the freed inmates to be of good behaviours.

In a remark, Chief Wali of the State Shari’a Court of Appeal, Alhaji Buhari Yahayya urged the beneficiaries to avoid acts that could take them back to the prison.
Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto, Barrister Lema Sambo Wali, also commended Senator Wamakko for the gesture.
Wali who was represented by the NBA Secretary, Barrister Kabiru Muhammad, urged other wealthy individuals to emulate him.
Abubakar Zaidi from Sokoto city and Rahman Osayemi from Ibadan, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to Senator Wamakko for the gesture.
