Costa Rica must pay Nicaragua nearly $400,000 in damages in a border dispute between the neighbouring countries, a Court in The Hague ruled on Friday.
The payment covers defence costs and removal of environmental damage after Nicaragua temporarily occupied land claimed by Costa Rica, the United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) said.
The amount of the decision was clearly lower than the about $7 million that Costa Rica had previously demanded.

In 2010, Nicaragua stationed troops and planted its flag on Calero Island, which is near the border between the countries and claimed by Costa Rica.
During the occupation, the ecological system of the island was damaged.
In 2015, the ICJ ruled in favour of Costa Rica in the border dispute, recognising its sovereignty over the 2.5-kilometre island, but didn’t declare an amount for compensation.
After both sides couldn’t agree on compensation, the court determined the payment amount.
