Undergraduate wins Skye Bank’s N5 million star prize in ‘Ref ‘n’ Win’ Promo

.As Merchant, Gidado emerge tops at mCash Re-Launch

A 26-year old undergraduate, Damilola Rachel Ajayi, has emerged the overall winner of N5million star prize in the just-concluded Skye Bank Ref ‘n’ Win Promo. The ‘Ref n Win’ promo was a youth-focused initiative designed to reward Skye Bank’s account holders, who were mainly undergraduates across the country.

This is just as the Bank’s mCash Merchant, Sulaiman Gidado, also emerged one of the top performing agents in the country, as made known by the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) made this known at the mCash relaunch in Lagos, recently.As part of the renewed efforts to further drive financial inclusion in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN’s) mandate, NIBSS, in collaboration with banks, financial regulators, leading telecommunications companies, and merchants were at the re-launched of the payment solution.

In the course of the Ref ‘n’ Win Promo, students who referred their friends to open accounts earned commission on the accounts opened, and qualified for prizes ranging from N25,000 to N50,000. They also stood a chance to partake in the grand draw to win the star price value of N5million, which Ajayi won. Miss Ajayi, a resident of Kwara State, who runs her account with the Skye Bank Unilorin branch learnt about the promo through the campus promo flyer, and went all out to canvass for account opening with friends, assuring them that they stood a chance to win big in the promo.  

At the prize and cheque presentation ceremony in Ilorin recently, the Office Technology and Management (OTM) student of the Federal Polytechnic Offa winner, could not hide her joy over the news of her winning.She said: “although it was not easy, but with determination and the help of God I was able to convince most students especially my friends in Unilorin to open an account with Skye Bank.” 

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Lanre Tajudeen Ajibade, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sulaiman Abdulkareem, appreciated Skye Bank for keeping faith with their promise and empowering the winner of the promo. “Although before now, I did not have a business relationship with Skye Bank, but with this gesture from the bank, I will open an account today,” he affirmed. 

While the bank’s Regional Head, South West I, Ibadan, Abimbola Akorede, noted that “the bank was at various locations in the nation’s tertiary institutions. The objective was to empower Nigerian youths while also deepening financial inclusion in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) mandate.”  
Meanwhile, while fielding questions on mCash at the re-launch, the Bank Head, E-Business, Akinwale Ojo, described mCash as an innovative solution targeted at low-value retail payments

He further said: “The intention of mCash is to create enhanced opportunity for people who rely mostly on cash to find convenient means of making payments electronically thus further enabling financial inclusion in Nigeria.”

On his part, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NIBSS, Adebisi Shonubi, said: “in the next two years, the plan is to have 500,000 agent networks that will provide financial services as well as educate and inform people on how the platform works.”The mCash utilises Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, USSD code in payment processing. Merchants can deploy mCash as a payment channel by registering with their banks, who will issue them an 8-digit seller code which buyers or payers need to use while making payments to them.
