The University of Benin team, tagged the Uniben Royals, have eliminated the University of Lagos’ (Unilag) Marines from the ongoing Higher Institutions Football League (HIFL).

The Uniben Royals defeated their counterparts 1-0 in the second leg of the tie decided on Tuesday to emerge winner on 2-1 aggregate. The first leg ended one goal apiece in Lagos on August 1.

In some of the other second leg matches played this week, Usman Dan Fodio University Sultans beat BUK Stallions 3-1 to progress to the next round on 3-2 aggregates. BUK won the first leg 1-0.

Also Unical Malabites failed to make their home game against UNN count after losing 2-1 at home to their counterparts despite winning the first leg 1-0 away.The aggregate scores for the two teams was 2-2 with UNN likely to progress on away goal rule, although they will have to wait for the outcome of the technical meeting of the organisers scheduled for today in Abuja.

ATBU also made it to the next round with their 2-2 result against Unijos, the Jos Highlanders, after securing a goalless draw in the first leg.Meanwhile, there are reports of an attack on centre referee and protest in the game involving the Jos Highlanders and ATBU in Jos.According to the report, the crisis erupted during the one-minute additional time with the organisers believing that the game has technically ended.

According to a member of the main organizing committee (MOC), Gara Gombe, the MOC is waiting for the report of all the matches played and a decision will be taken during the technical committee meeting scheduled for Abuja
