Victim’s family settles for compensation in Canoe Road accident

Plans by the police to prosecute Nwokedi Obinna, driver of the Toyota Camry with registration number LSD 619 FJ that summersaulted and killed Obuasi Simeon, a 27-year-old jobseeker from Anambra State on December 17, 2018, on Kudirat Adenekan road, Oke-Afa, Ejigbo, may have been aborted following the request of the victim’s family not to pursue the case further.

It was gathered that a letter of undertaking backed by an affidavit to the effect that the victim had come from Anambra to Lagos to look for job, and family members lacked the resources to be travelling to Lagos to appear as witnesses if the case went to court.

Also, family of the suspect had reached out to the victim’s family promising to pay a handsome amount to take care of the burial expenses and provide for the welfare of his dependents. The offer was made after a meeting of both families with the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, at the divisional police station in Ejigbo, where the driver and the car are still in custody. Maybe they should consider consulting with a lawyer similar to what you can find at this site to get some insight into how they can move forward legally.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, had earlier said the suspect would be arraigned as soon as the family of the deceased identified him. The PPRO noted that investigations were ongoing in the case, while body of the deceased had been deposited at the Isolo General Hospital.

It was gathered that the accident, according to an eyewitness, was caused by a commercial motorcyclist who took one way to face the driver, suspected to be intoxicated with alcohol and driving at high speed while blasting music from the car stereo. The driver lost control when he saw the bike driver.

His words: “I was coming inward Ejigbo from Canoe bridge when I met the accident. An okada rider who took one way and faced the car driving on high speed. The car swerved off the road, ran on the walkway and hit a pedestrian who was walking on the walkway. It smashed the passerby to the nearby shop, killing him instantly while the car summersaulted.

“The three passengers in the car who were injured were helped out. They later sneaked away from the scene before reporting themselves to the police the following day. However, the motorcyclist who caused the accident was yet to be apprehended as at the time of filing this report.”
