As the countdown continues ahead of the 2018 West African Universities Games (WAUG), the host, University of Port Harcourt has boasted that it would teach all the participating universities a ‘free lesson in the art of graceful conquest’ in track and field, as well as swimming events.

“Team UniPort dominance at successive NUGA and WAUG Games has been most evident in swimming and track and field events, and all visiting athletes and officials should watch out for the fishes that rule swimming pools in the Niger Delta and beyond,” a member of the organising body, Williams Wodi, told The Guardian yesterday.

“As the host University, we want to win only fair contests that are in line with the trademark Olympic spirit of friendship, respect and comradeship with athletes from other universities, and the need to bring the young people of West Africa together.

We promise to be humble and graceful in victory,” Wodi, who is the Chairman, Publicity and Media sub-committee of WAUG-Uniport 2018, stated.

The 2018 WAUG Games, which will see 85 universities from 16 countries in attendance, will hold from October 31 to November 12 in Port Harcourt.

The West African Universities Games (WAUG), otherwise known as ECOWAS STUDENTS’ Games is a legacy to the youth of the West African sub-region.
