Yahaya Olanrewaju and Titilayo Osagie on Saturday emerged winners of the 10th edition of the Lawyers Table Tennis Open championships tagged: Mfon Usoro Cup held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

At a colourful event that witnessed the gathering of lawyers across the federation, Olanrewaju from Lokoja defeated Seye Oki from Lagos in three straight sets of 11-5,11-6, 11-6 in the men’s category, while Osagie dethroned the defending champion, Yetunde Martins, to claim the women’s title in 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 sets.

The men’s third place position was won by Nyengierefake Joshua from Port Harcourt, after humbled Kabiru Wale Adeleke in 3-2 sets, while Zainab Olubode Shodunke won her duel against Queenette Hogan also in 3-2 sets in the women’s class.

For the efforts, Olanrewaju and Osagie each got a trophy and a cash prize of N250,000, the runners up went home with N150,000, while the third placed players were rewarded with N100,000 in addition medals received. However, every quarterfinalists and semifinalists in the two categories were rewarded with various sums.

Speaking at the occasion, the sponsor of the tournament, Mrs. Mfon Usoro, expressed excitement over the large turnout of participants at the event, saying that “was an indication that the championship is getting bigger and better each passing year.”

The sponsor, however, assured of her continuous support of the event as long as there was life.

One of the major highlights of the occasion was the presentation of award to her by the organisers represented by Mr. Anthony Atata, also a lawyer, for Mrs. Usoro’s unrelenting sponsorship of the event in the last 10 years of the competition, which has afforded lawyers the enabling environment to socialise and exercise their bodies away from the rigour of their jobs.
