Zumratu Islamiyya, Wesley Girls, others win Opeifa Handball tournament

Zumratu Islamiyya Senior Secondary School, Yaba, Wesley Girls Senior High School, Herbert Macaulay Junior High School and Eletu Edibo Junior High School at the weekend emerged winners in the senior and junior boys and girls’ categories of the Opeifa Lagos Secondary Schools Handball Championship held at the Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba, Lagos.

Zumratu Islamiyya thrashed Lagos City College, Yaba, 29-16 to win the senior boys’ category, while Wesley Girls defeated CMS Girls High School 12-5 in the senior girls’ cadre.

In the junior boys’ division, Herbert Macaulay humbled Jibowu Junior High School 14-13, while Eletu Edibo girls defeated United Christian Junior Secondary School 2-1 to emerged winners.

In the inter-state clashes, the Lagos U-15 boys defeated their Ekiti State counterparts 28-8 as Lagos U-12 side also outclassed Ondo State 22-15.Ojo Gbenga of Lagos City College was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the senior boys’ while Ishat Adebowale of CMS Girls High School was picked as the MVP of the Senior Girls category. Uche Ukah of Herbert Macaulay Junior High School won the junior boy MVP award, as Ariyisu A. of Eletu Edibo Junior High School was awarded the prize in the girls’ class.

Others include the fair play awards for the senior boys category, which went to White Sand College, Lekki while Apapa Senior Girls High School won the girls cadre. Daniel Favour of United Christian Junior Secondary School and Opabori Michael of Jibowu Junior High School were adjudged the best goalkeepers in the junior boys and girls categories respectively, as Mercy Merimen of CMS Girls High School and Ajayi Kazeem of Ikosi Senior High School won the senior girls and boys groups respectively.

The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, applauded the sponsor, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, for funding the tournament, pledging that the state would continue to encourage such initiatives.At the occasion, an excited Opeifa stated that having achieved 50 per cent of the set target of sponsoring the championship in Lagos, that the fifth edition would now be upgraded to a South West regional tournament.
