No fewer than 16 political parties in Katsina State have declared their readiness to team up and field a consensus governorship candidate in Saturday, March 9, 2019, elections.

Principal Coordinator of the non-governmental organisation, Human Right Crusade, involved in the arrangement, Barr Aminu Maigari, who made this known in press conference at the weekend in Katsina, explained that the decision of the parties to re-align their focus was not only in the overall interest of the people of the state but would ensure optimum use of their resources.

He said: “The next gubernatorial election will be interesting under this plan. We will try to field one candidate for governorship and all the parties will contest the house of assembly election on individual party platform.

“But consideration will be given to the party fielding a better candidate as other parties will withdraw their candidates and support the better candidate. This plan will be retained up to 2023.”

Maigari, flanked by the governorship flag bearers of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Abubakar Halilu Jikamshi; Shehu Sulaiman Labo Rimi, Accord; and Abdullahi Shuaibu, Massess Movement of Nigeria (MMN), listed some of the parties that entered into the agreement as Action Alliance, NDP, APP, PPN, UPC, ANRP, NGO, AGAP, NPN, APM, NNPP and NPL.

The erstwhile legal adviser to then Kaduna State governor, Balarabe Musa, and former National Deputy Legal Adviser of the defunct ANPP, warned that with the launch of the machinery, the affected parties would field one candidate for any position if they deemed it imperative, saying they would work together and find lasting solution to the challenge of all the elections in the state won by the ruling party.

According to him, a lot of the politicians joined various political parties with wrong motives and participated in elections without commitment to winning because they were into politics to trade their opportunities and bargain for token privileges.
