The Lagos art and culture scene, which was last week Sunday, ignited with the beginning of Eko Theatre Festival, will again remain calm for sometimes as the festival rounds off today.

Formerly known as the Bariga Open Air Theatre (B.O.A.T) , with Segun Adefila as founder, the carnival, which witnessed a showcase of dance and drama, drew art enthusiasts from all walks to the different venues of the event in Lagos.

As a performance-based festival, Adefila used the medium to celebrate the performance arts, as a viable tool for social engineering and empowerment and to pass diverse messages to the youth and government.

With MTN Foundation supporting this edition, the weeklong event began with some of the artistes visiting the Nike Art Gallery, Lekki, Lagos, featured colloquium, film screening, drama, dance, among other top-notch performances. This year’s event raised the ante, as it has international artistes, the African Israeli Stage group, who did Dance of the Forests on Thursday and will this evening perform The Trials of Brother Jero in Hebrew language for the first time in Nigeria.

Speaking on the carnival, the founder, Adefila disclosed that he introduced the festival to mark his more than two decades of creative theatrical performances.Adefila, who is co-founder of Crown Troupe of Africa, said he is delighted to have MTN Foundation support his initiative after over two decades of performance and depending on friends and art lovers for support.

“For the first time ever in 22 years of training, young people in the ghetto of Bariga, we are getting a grant, a direct funding from MTN. This is a good sign for art practitioners and enthusiasts alike. It means a lot to the Nigerian arts scene,” he said.Rounding off today, at Freedom Park, Lagos Island, DGDG will present Ijo Agba, a dance performance; Crown Troupe of Africa will interpret The Trials of Brother Jero on stage, while popular Afro musician, Buga, will keep guests dancing on the dance floor.
