2019 General Elections: It’s Buhari versus Atiku

Bearing any unforeseen circumstances, the two major contenders for the highest office in the land have emerged. They are, the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Peoples Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

President Muhammadu Buhari was affirmed as the Presidential candidate of the ruling APC at next year’s elections. He was presented as the party’s flag bearer at the 4th APC national convention which was held at the Eagles Square, Abuja. He was returned unopposed but total votes cast by all APC state chapters and the FCT were in excess of 14 million with Kano and Lagos accounting for 2.9 million and 2.2 million respectively.

On the other hand, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar picked the presidential ticket of the PDP, with a resounding victory at the just concluded party convention in Port Harcourt. He scored a total of 1, 532 votes ahead of his closest rival, Sokoto state governor,  Aminu Tambuwal who got 693 votes while Senate President Bukola Saraki came third with 317 votes.

Atiku Abubakar, contested the 2015 primary election under the platform of the APC but came third behind Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso and Muhammadu Buhari, who won the primary and the general election.
