When an Egungun dances well its followers become very elated and satisfactorily joyous. The same cannot be said of a masquerade who chose to dance off tunes at all times hence the poor performance of such a masquerade becomes the burden of the masquerade lineage.
The performance of a masquerade at the market square must definitely attract peoples comments , condemnation and applause as appropriate . This is why it is very needful for the Egungun to usually rehearse well its dancing skills before public outings and why the owners of the masquerade lineage should always make a good choice of the bearer of the regalia at each festival
Usually, it is not possible for the masquerade to judge its dancing steps, the spectators does while it is the duty of the followers to signal to egungun when its dancing steps are going negative to the sounding of the bata drums .
In most cases however, the followers and the Aworosasas are usually interested in consumption of the liquor gin and sharing of proceeds at the expense of the well being of the Egungun until they are all disgraced from the market square
The worst scenario is when you are following a masquerade who does not listen to the drummers nor the followers corrections . In such a situation it advisable you join the spectators than to remain in the masquerade entourage. Obviously, the dancing masquerade does not know when his dancing steps are off the tracks. This is the simple reason why the Egungun must listen to the drummers and take corrections of its Atokuns and followers.
