“…not in anyway holding a senseless brief for these up and coming kids, but I think they have more to contend with in the present times, than my generation or those from way before mine. Let’s agree that our time in flat comparison was relatively easier, as we had only the TV as a major distraction- many homes couldn’t even afford one. Practically, we were only truly distracted for less than 3 hours on a given day, at least for me. NTV-Ibadan ran programming from 4pm-12am on weekdays. 8 hours of which less than two was mine to spend as I deemed fit. My time management was divided between domestic chores, family enterprise, homework and private tutoring. Entertainment was devoted to only Saturdays. Even then there was constant adult supervision, if or when the most harmless game of LUDO was your choice of fun! Living, for that time was pretty simple and relatively less challenging.
It’s quite hard being a kid in this generation. The oversaturating effects of the Internet and social media are additional distraction; a multiple detour on a fast highway to individual growth and self-development. Yes they are smarter, but at what cost to their sanity?
These kids are buckling under the burden of social distractions! We are raising kids these days in social pressure cookers, I hope we know enough to give them a break. I honestly wish we could give them a chance.”
That’s it FB!
