The 2016 edition of Adire carnival hosted by the Yoruba Community in Austria “Egbe Omo Odudwa” took place on Saturday 2nd of July 2016. The Carnival train started from the Nigerian mission with the Charge D’ Affairs His Excellency Mr Dantig flagging off the event by distributing Nigerian flag to all participants under the motto “Keep the flag flying. He advised all participants to be law abiding and to be good Ambassador of our great country NIGERIA.
The Carnival train moved through the city to the designated venue of the street party at the African Street “Afrikanergasse” in the heart of Vienna. The participant dressed in their colourful Adire attires danced trough the street of Vienna. They keep waving both the Nigerian and Austrian flag as they drum and sang Nigerian songs. They were later joined by the Eyo and Egungun masquerades.
This year’s event was attended by some prominent Nigerian despite hitches in obtaining Schengen visa for the invited guest at the Austrian Embassy.
Prominent guest include the Deputy Majority leader of the Lagos state House of Assembly Hon. Jimoh, PA Nojeem Mayegun “Omo Oloja” (The ledged Boxer), the Mayor of the 2nd district of Vienna and many Austrian prominent.
The Carnival train was led by the Head of Nigerian Mission His Excellency CDA Mr Dantin and the President of Egbe Omo Oduduwa Mr Lanre Fagbodun.
The Highlight of the event was marked by the releasing of three white pigeons symbolising peace. Each Pigeon representing Nigeria, Austrian and the whole world.
