Doctors in a private hospital in Benin City, Edo State are battling to save the limbs of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board member, Brown Ebewele, who was involved in a car crash along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

Ebewele was in Lagos for the recent investiture ceremony of the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC), and was on his way back to Benin City when his private car was involved in an accident around Ore in Ondo State.

Speaking with The Guardian on Monday, Ebewele said: “I don’t really know what happened, but all I could remember was that my car hit a stationery van and summersaulted many times. I sustained a spinal cord injury in the lower region, and as we speak, I can’t walk. I can’t even raise my legs. I have been in one position since then. It is very serious.”

The Guardian learnt that Ebewele was rushed to a private orthopedic hospital in Benin City, where he is still receiving treatment.

It is vital that you see a doctor after an collision, even if there are no obvious signs of trauma. There are head and neck doctors at NextGenOMS and at every other hospital. Even the smallest of collisions can impact your health. You must have a check up immediately.

The Edo State-born Ebewele was the AFN Technical Director in his first stinct in the federation under Tony Urhobo, who was president between 1997 and 1998.

Since the election that brought Ebewele and former national triple jump queen, Rosa Collins to the AFN in 2017, it has been a series crisis.

Ebewele’s move to reclaim his former position of Technical Director had been blocked by the AFN boss, Shehu Gusau.

Recently, Ebewele was linked with the position of Director General of the newly established Edo State Sports Commission.
