Three years after the demise of its financier, the annual Asoju Oba Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup continues to grow in leaps and bounds. The family of the late business mogul, Molade Okoya-Thomas yesterday unveiled plans to stage a befitting 49th edition.

Also, a peep into what to expect in the 50th anniversary of the longest running sports competition in Nigeria was hinted at the press briefing to herald the kick off of this year’s edition.

Ayodeji Okoya-Thomas, who noted that this year’s marked the third edition of the tournament after the death of their father, said the family was grateful to the Lagos State Government for their unflinching support to the tournament since its inception in 1968.

“One of his greatest wishes while alive was that the family should continue the sponsorship of the tournament after his demise… we should therefore like to give God all the glory for giving us the ability to continue this noble legacy for the third year running since he was called to glory,” Okoya-Thomas said.

22 titles will be competed in the cadet, junior and senior categories while the para events will also be part of this year’s edition.

From Monday November 27 to December 1, table tennis players across Lagos will converge at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium for the championship.

For the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Kweku Tandoh, the unflinching support of the late philanthropist to sports development in the state.
