The Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed the money laundering charges filed against Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the same court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The court on Friday, in a verdict by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, quashed the charges against Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, who had been in a running legal battle with the EFCC since 2016.

The court’s decision followed an application argued by Ofili-Ajumogobia’s lawyer, Olawale Akoni (SAN).

Akoni told the court that the application was a sequel to a November 28, 2019 judgment of Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which he said had quashed the recommendations made by the National Judicial Council.

The prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, had filed a counter-affidavit challenging the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the application praying that the charges against Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia be quashed.

Ruling on the arguments canvassed by the parties, Justice Allagoa held that, “I have looked at the application. I have also looked into the counter-affidavit of the prosecution, it does not indeed controvert the application.

“I am satisfied that the application has merit, the prayers sought for are hereby granted as prayed.”
