Initiator and sponsor of the South-East Cricket Championship, Chuma Anosike has urged government to encourage private individuals who support grassroots development for sports to develop more in the country.

The former board member of the Nigeria Cricket Federation said inadequate infrastructures and insufficient equipment are some of hindrances of the field and batting game while calling for more age grade tournaments for upcoming players.

Speaking on the heels of the recently concluded eighth edition of the competition at Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Anosike, who is chairman of Anambra State Cricket Association, said the developmental competition has achieved some measure of success.

Anosike stated that the open tournament enabled participating states to showcase their best talents while expressing optimism that some talents harnessed will represent Nigeria national team in the future.

For the first time in the history of the Anosike Cup, female tournament was incorporated to give women folk a platform to participate. The lawyer and sports administrator said the apex regional tournament is growing in strength and attracting quality talents.

“I have been involved in Cricket for over 35 years as a player, administrator, facilitator and promoter. A few years ago when it became obvious that the game was not growing at the national level, I decided that a bottom up approach was necessary to develop the sport.
