The National Assembly has transmitted the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2022 to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr. Olatunde Amos Ojo, transmitted the authenticated copies of the bill to the president on Monday, according to a statement by Babajide Omoworare, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate).

Omoworare said the transmission was in accordance with the provisions of Section 58 (3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2 LFN 2004.

President Buhari had declined assent to the Electoral Bill 2021 transmitted to him in November over the provision of direct primaries as the sole mode of conducting political parties’ primaries.

The president had said he would assent to the electoral bill if the lawmakers provided options for the conduct of political parties’ primaries.
