Batch B Corpers End Orientation, Begin Assignments

The Batch B, stream II, 2019 members of the National Youth Service Corps sheme rounded off their three weeks orientation course on Monday with advice for them across the states to shun ethnic and religious bias, encourage peaceful coexistence and be at peace in the various places of primary assignment.

The Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, has urged batch 2019 B stream II corps members to shun ethnic and religious bias.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Manassah Jatau, stated this at the passing out ceremony of the corps members Monday at the temporary camp, Amada, Gombe State.

He noted that youths constitute a dominant figure in the national mobilisation and growth which placed responsibility on them to play a crucial role in the task of nation building.

ā€œI implore you to take advantage of your presence in Gombe State and the course content to cultivate the spirit of friendship by shunning ethnic and religious bigotry and be the change you want to see.

Ā ā€œOn our part, the government will create an enabling environment and necessary support for your community development endeavours,ā€ he said.

ā€˜Don’t reject corps members’

In Katsina State, Governor Aminu Masari warned employers not to reject corps members posted to their various organisations for the one year primary assignment.

The governor gave the warning in Katsina while declaring close the three week orientation for the second batch, stream two of 2019 NYSC members posted to the state.

A total of 1,700 corps members completed the three week orientation and were deployed for the one year primary assignment.

Masari who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths Development, Mallam Useini Dangani, said, ā€œAs a matter of policy, the NYSC posts 75 per cent of corps members in every batch to rural areas where a large number of Nigerians live.

ā€œI therefore appeal to you to accept your posting in good faith. I assure you that it will be an exciting and fulfilling service year anywhere you are posted within the state.

ā€œI want to warn all employers not to reject corps members posted to them. The rejection of corps members by employers is inconsistent with the aspiration of the present government and the spirit and objective of the NYSC scheme. I am therefore calling for a mandatory acceptance by employers of corps members posted to them.ā€

Eight foreign graduates refused registration

The National Youth Service Corps Coordinator in Kano State, Alhaji Ladan Baba,Ā says no fewer than eight foreign graduates were refused registration due to incomplete and inconsistent documents.

Baba, during the passing out parade of corps members in the state, said some of the graduates were also blocked online from registration as a result of failure to defend their degrees as foreign students.

ā€œAs a matter of fact, some of them cannot express themselves verbally.

ā€œMore worrisome is the fact that some of them did not undergo any academic pursuits, but obtained certificates through illegal means.ā€

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, assured the corps members that his administration would continue to ensureĀ their safety, as well as adequate security.

Ā Kebbi NYSC plans bigger camp

The National Youth Service Corps has disclosed that the permanent orientation camp in Dankingeri, Kebbi State would accommodate 3,000 corps members and officials when the ongoing renovation embarked by the state government is completed.

Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Barde Usman, said this during the closing ceremony of the three weeks orientation camp.

Usman said, ā€œWe are optimistic that if the ongoing renovation is completed, it will upgrade the present camp to 3,000 capacity to reduce accommodation problem.ā€

The state Governor, Abubakar Bagudu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, Alhaji UseniĀ  Mungadi, urged the corps members in the state to make tangible impact on education, health, agriculture, and other sectors relevant to their calling and profession.

ā€˜Most corps members in Osun’ll serve in schools’

The Osun State Coordinator, National Youth Service corps, Adegoke Ayodele, on Monday, said 70 per centĀ of 1,800 Corps members posted to the stateĀ would serve in educational institutions.

Ayodele told the corps members to accept their posting in good faith, adding that failure to do that would attract sanctions.

The Osun State Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, who was represented by his Chief ofĀ Staff, Dr. Charles Akinola, assured Corps members that his administration was passionate about them.

He said, ā€œEnsure you play your role in nation building effectively without bitterness or rancour, as these are emotions capable of incapacitating and limiting you from achieving optimally in life.ā€

ā€˜Justify relevance of NYSC’

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, also charged corps members deployed to the state to justify the relevance of the National Youths Service Corps by engaging in activities that would promote building of a united, peaceful and egalitarian Nigeria.

Fayemi, represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, spoke while addressing corps members at the orientation camp in the state.

He said, ā€œThe relevance of NYSC scheme to building a united, peaceful, and egalitarian society in the nation cannot be disputed. It has promoted the mobility of skilled labour and the development of the socio-economic of the nation.ā€

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Emmanuella Okpongete, urged the corps members’ employers to provide modest accommodation and transport allowance to corpers who she said were evenly posted to all the 16 council areas of the state.

NYSC arrests two fake corps members

Two fake corps members who claimed to have graduated from the Imo State University have been arrested in Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State coordinator of the scheme, Sanda Ramotu, confirmed this to journalists immediately after the closing ceremony of the orientation course for corps members in the state.

ā€œWe have handed over the suspects to the police for further investigation. They are no longer our corps members.ā€

Delta NYSC rewards corp member

The State coordinator of National Youth Service Corps, Delta State, Mr. Omotade Ayodele, on Monday eulogised a Computer Science graduate of the Imo State University, Chidera Akanwa, for returning an android phone worth N500,000

Akanwa picked the phone while walking to his hostel and decided to return same to the management of the NYSC in Delta State.

Ayodele who announced this at the closing ceremony of the orientation course for the corps members saidĀ the management of NYSC would further reward him with one month allowance (bonus) of N19,800.00 in addition to a letter of commendation that was presented to Akanwa on behalf of the NYSC, by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

The governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Patrick Muoboghare, also stated that Akanwa displayed the patriotic spirit of a true Nigerian by returning the phone, and urged others to emulate him.

Okowa admonished the corps members to respect the culture of their host communities saying, ā€œThe differences between the people’s peculiar ways of life and the ones you are used to might be negligible. You have to assiduously learn to show understanding and adaptability.ā€

CorpersĀ in rural areas to get N10,000 monthly

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, on Monday saidĀ corps members deployed in rural areas of the state would be paid N10,000 monthly each.

He said a reward system had been put in place to appreciate corps members who distinguished themselves during their service year.

ā€œWe areĀ implementingĀ an upward review of N10,000 monthly allowance in favour of corps members in rural and difficult-to-reach areas.

ā€œI am also directing corps members’ employers in the state to live up to their responsibility of accepting, nurturing and caring for NYSC members who have been placed in their employ.ā€

NYSC vaccinates BauchiĀ corpersĀ against yellow fever

The National Youth Service Corps in Bauchi State has commenced the immuniation of the state corps members against yellow fever.

The Bauchi State Coordinator of NYSC, Bashir Shehu, disclosed this on Monday.

He said, ā€œThe vaccination will cover not only the newly deployed NYSC members but will be extended to those who are already serving in all the 20 local government areass of the state.

ā€œFurthermore, we have consistently assured the Corps members that Bauchi is a very peaceful and NYSC friendly state. May I therefore appeal to the state government, security agencies, our royal fathers, religious and community leaders and indeed all the good people of the state to continue to make concerted effort to ensure adequate security for the corps members.ā€

The state Governor, Bala Mohammed, represented by a commissioner in the state, Hajara Gidado, urged the NYSC members to make meaningful contributions to the development of their host communities. [PUNCH]
