The three women rallied more than 60,000 fans at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday night, September 26 in support of girls education and ending global poverty.
Beyonce Knowles, Michelle Obama and Malala Yousafzai rallied more than 60,000 fans at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday night, September 26 in support of girls education and ending global poverty. The event was held by Global Poverty Project which aims to end extreme poverty by 2030.
Beyonce performed some of her feminist songs including “Survivor”, “Run the World” and “Single Ladies”. She included quotations from Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, poet Maya Angelou and mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey in her performance. Michelle came onstage to hug the Beyonce following her performance.

“Let’s give it up for the amazing Beyonce,” Michelle said. “I am thrilled to be here tonight … and honored to follow a woman who I admire and adore.” Barrack Obama’s wife then reminded fans to participate in her new campaign to promote girls education, asking them to tweet photos of themselves along with a message of one thing they learned in school, using the hashtag #62MillionGirls.
“Right now, more than 62 million girls worldwide are out of school. As I’ve traveled around the world, I have met so many of these girls, and they are so bright and so determined to make something of themselves… These girls are our girls, and I simply cannot walk away from them,” said Michelle.
Malala was passionate as she spoke on the importance of girls education. She said, “I want education to be the top priority because how can we end poverty … when we deny the right to education. It’s not that there is lack of money in this world … we have billions and trillions of dollars, but where the money goes is military, it’s things that are useless and that are not useful to society.”
The event was also attended by Vice President Joe Biden, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Hugh Jackman, Bono, Leonardo DiCaprio, Pearl Jam, Stephen Colbert, Kerry Washington, Salma Hayek and Olivia Wilde, Usher, Jason Sudeikis, Laverne Cox, Katie Holmes, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill and Melinda Gates.
