A Bureau de change operator Edwin Nwankwo, on Thursday appeared in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining 15, 500 dollars under the guise of changing to Naira equivalent.
Nwankwo, whose address was not given, is standing trial on a three-count charge, including fraud and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Mameh, told the court that the defendant and others still at large, allegedly committed the offences sometime in November 2018, in Lagos.
Mameh said the defendant fraudulently obtained 15, 500 dollars from one Abdulmalik Yunusa, “under the guise of a bureau de change operator, who will change the dollars for him once his dollar account is credited”.
The prosecutor claimed that the defendant knew his representation was false, but deceived the complainant into crediting his dollar account with the said money.
“The defendant received the money but did not give the naira equivalent,” Mameh said.
He said the offences contravened sections 287 (9), 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Nwankwo, however, denied the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr B. I. Bakare, granted him N750, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Bakare said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
He then adjourned the case until May 22, for further mention.
