It is the eight edition of the South- East Cricket Championship, which for the first time has incorporated a female category.

According to the organisers, female teams from Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo will compete for fame and glory, while six teams will slug it out in the male category.

Sponsored by Chuma Anosike, a lawyer, the tournament has succeeded in spreading the game of cricket to every state in the South East and provides a veritable platform for development of the game at the grassroots.

Anosike said “the tournament will also provide an opportunity for youths to interact in a constructive manner, build lasting bonds of friendship and respect for one another.

“The game of cricket remains a crucial socio-cultural tool to foster youth development. Its core values of fairness, respect for rules and general etiquette are values, which our youth will do well to imbibe.”

He revealed that everything is in place to ensure that both participants and guests have an unforgettable experience over the four days of competition.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) board yesterday announced a partnership deal with one of the country’s leading transport and logistics companies, Transports Services Limited (TSL).

The deal makes TSL the first corporate organisation to support the NCF in its quest to host a befitting international cricket tournament under the auspices of the sports’ world governing body- the ICC.

“We are quite pleased to enter into a partnership with the NCF. Cricket is one of the oldest sports in Nigeria, dating back before football, with a rich tradition and heritage all over the country. As a supporter of sports, TSL is attracted to the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the NCF to further popularize cricket in Nigeria. We see a synergy of purpose among both organisations and we are happy to support the ambitious plans laid out by the NCF for the hosting of the ICC World T20,” TSL’s Managing Director, Ayodeji Wright, said of the deal.

The NCF will host the ICC Twenty20 (West Africa) qualifiers at the TBS Cricket Oval, Lagos from April 12 to 22, 2018. The Nigerian Men’s team will be competing against its counterparts from Ghana, Sierra-Leone and The Gambia in what promises a very competitive tournament. Of the four teams, the top two will represent West Africa at the Africa finals later this year.
