Climate Change Worst Threat To Food Security – NIFST President

The President of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, on Tuesday, said climate change is the worst threat to food security.

Prof Iwe also said the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted negatively on food production and was causing a growing prevalence of malnutrition across the world.

He spoke at the ongoing 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NIFST holding in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Prof Iwe said with the interruption of trade flows and job losses globally, everyone must be prepared to fight for the future so as to avert the World Food Programme – UN agency’s prediction – which estimated that 265 million individuals would be in acute food insecurity compared to the 135 million before COVID-19.
