Anti-grazing bill sponsored by a lawmaker representing Ikom II State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mr Elvert Ayambem, has passed second reading.
The bill prohibits open rearing and grazing of livestock and provides for the establishment of ranches and livestock and grazing management, regulation and control.
The bill recommended a term of five years or a fine of N10m or both for offenders.

Speaking on Wednesday during plenary, the lawmaker said the bill sought to promote modern techniques of animal husbandry and to manage the environmental impact of open grazing.
He added that the bill would also prevent the destruction of farms, crops, settlements and properties.
According to him, “One of the objectives of this bill is that it will prevent killings, sexual molestation and clashes between herders and farmers or their host communities caused by open rearing and grazing of livestock.”
