Customs raids car market in Lagos, impounds N1b assorted vehicles

•Seizes 6206 bags of rice, others

THE Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), yesterday raided some car markets in Lagos.The anti-smuggling operations were carried out in Ikoyi and Festac, where about 59 assorted vehicles with the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1.076 billion were seized.

40 of the cars were the 2017 models, while one-month grace period had been given to the owners to prove legal documentations.

The Customs Area Comptroller, Mohammed Uba Garba, who disclosed this in Lagos, said the cars were suspected to have entered the country without proper documentations.

Garba identified some of the cars as Toyota Prado Jeeps, Lexus Jeeps, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Camry, Coaster Bus and Toyota Hiace Bus.

Among the vehicles were those with bullet proof, which according to Garba would require “End User Certificates from the Office of the Security Adviser (NSA).”

He investigation was ongoing to reveal those behind the clearance of the vehicles, adding that they would be made to face the full wrath of the law. The comptroller also disclosed that 10 trailers of 6, 206 bags of foreign parboiled rice were seized from smugglers.
