The Spain international striker Diego Costa will undergo an operation in Brazil on Saturday.

According to a statement by his Club, Atletico Madrid, the surgery was an effort to speed Costa’s recovery from the pain in his left foot ever since suffering a broken metatarsal back in 2006.

“Diego Costa will have surgery this week due to the discomfort he has been suffering in his left foot in recent weeks,” a statement on the club website.

“After considering all the possible options, the decision has been made to undertake the operation in Brazil, supervised by Atletico de Madrid’s medical services.

“Our striker, who had an operation on the fifth metatarsal of his left foot 12 years ago, has been enduring ongoing pain due to foot trauma suffered three weeks ago.”

The club, however, did not state when the Spaniard will be back to action.

The 30-year-old has been enduring a difficult 2018-19 campaign in front of goal, with just three goals recorded so far.

Costa played 90 minutes against Girona on Sunday and helped Atletico rescue a 1-1 draw as his run prompted Jonas Ramalho to score a late own-goal.
