Wives of the policemen killed during the 2020 #EndSARS protests in Oyo State have lamented the hardship deaths of their breadwinners have exposed them to.

Five policemen were killed during the protest, which was eventually hijacked by some hoodlums in October 2020.

The slain policemen were Adegoke Ajibola, Rotimi Oladele, Peter Abegunde, James Akanmu, and Alidu Yusuf Wada.

Some of them said their children had been withdrawn from school because of their inability to continue to pay their fees.

Abegunde’s wife, Abiodun, appealed to the governor to fulfil his promise to offer scholarships to the children of the slain policemen.

Also Mrs Esther Alidu told our correspondent on Friday that her two children currently in Nursery 1 and Primary 1 respectively could not continue schooling this term because of school fees.

She said, “The Federal Government has promised each family N500,000 which they said is insurance money. But one of us has not collected because of issues with her bank. Things have not been easy but I just thank God. My children could not go to school this term because there is no money to pay their fees.

We are still awaiting the fulfilment of a scholarship promise by Governor Seyi Makinde. My children’s education is the most paramount to me now. I pray God will send help to those of us who were affected.”

The wives of the slain policemen had in August complained that the cheques of N500,000 given to them were not honoured when they took them to their banks. However, this was said to have been corrected.

Makinde had promised that the state government would pay victims, including families of slain policemen, but a member of the panel of enquiry, Babs Oduyoye, told Sunday PUNCH that payments would be done only after the panel had submitted its report to the governor.

He added that the report would be sent to the National Economic Council headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
