Etiquettes of fasting are numerous. It is part of fasting etiquettes:
1. For the fasting person to eat Suhur. al-Bukhari, 1923; Muslim, 1059.
2. To delay suhr till a period close to fajr . al-Bukhari, 1921.
3. If someone insults you while fasting to say “I am fasting”. Al-Bukhari, no. 1894; Muslim, 1151.
4. To hasten to break the fast. al-Bukhari, 1957; Muslim, 1098, al-Sawm, 632, classed as saheeh by al-Albani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, no. 560, Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 6/268, al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (6/269):
5. To break the fast with fresh dates; if not then with dry dates; if not then with water. Abu Dawood, no. 2356; al-Tirmidhi, 696; classed as hasan in al-Irwa’, 4/45.
6. When breaking fasting to say “Dhahaba al-‘zama’ wa abtallat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allaah (the thirst is gone, the veins have been moistened and the reward is assured, if Allah wills).” Abu Dawood, 2357; al-Bayhaqi, 4/239; classed as hasan in al-Irwa’, 4/39, al-Liqaa’ al-Shahri, 8
7. Not to be too thorough in rinsing the nose while fasting lest the water reach the throat. Majmu’ fatawa wa maqalat mutanawwi’ah 15/280
8. Give up false speech: lying, backbiting, slandering, insulting, cursing. Al-Bukhari 1903, 6075
9. To say prayers because Allah answer prayers especially during fasting. al-Bayhaqi, 3/345; classed as saheeh by al-Albani in al-Saheeh 1797, Ahmad, 21698; classed as saheeh by al-Albani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/491, al-Bazzaar; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/491.
10. To increase reading of Quran and other voluntary ‘Ibadaat: Taraweeh, Ad-Dhkhaar etc. al-Bukari 4614, Al-Siyar, Tahdeeb al Kamaal, Majmu’ fatawa ibn ‘Uthaymeen 20/516, at-Tibyan 76, al-Bukhari, al-Fath, No. 6, Al-Maosu’al Fiqhiyyah 34/123, irshaad al-fuhul 450-451
11. To be generous by sharing knowledge, giving money, using one’s position of authority or physical strength to help others, and having a good attitude. al-Bukhari, al-Fath, No. 6.
12. To combine fasting with feeding the poor. (Reported by Ahmad 5/343; Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 2137.
