Five former Inspectors-General of Police have visited the Force Headquarters in Abuja to pledge their support for the current Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Giwa, disclosed this in a post on X on Thursday, describing the visit as purposeful and a strong signal of institutional backing for the police leadership.
“Support from five former Inspectors General of Police is highly significant. Actions often carry more weight than titles,” Giwa stated.
According to him, the former police chiefs — Aliyu Attah, Mike Okiro, Ogbonna Onovo, Suleiman Abba, and Usman Alkali Baba — paid the visit on Tuesday to express solidarity with the current leadership.
Giwa noted that the former IGPs, having experienced the demands of the office, understand the pressures, critical decisions, and scrutiny that come with leading the Force.
“They know the sleepless nights, difficult decisions, and responsibility of leading the Force under national scrutiny,” he said.

He added that the retired police chiefs offered mentorship and shared practical advice with the IGP, urging him to sustain reforms, lead with intelligence, prioritise the welfare of officers, and uphold public trust.
Responding, Disu reportedly received the delegation with humility and expressed confidence in his leadership role, acknowledging the legacy built by his predecessors.
“He recognises he is building on decades of institutional history shaped by his predecessors and views this not as a burden, but as a privilege. The foundation is strong, and the path forward is clear,” Giwa added.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on March 4, 2026, sworn in Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja.
Disu took the oath of office ahead of a Federal Executive Council meeting, in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and other top government officials, following his endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police.
